More About… Miniature Votive Vessels

After visiting the Heraklion Archaeological Museum in Crete, I was inspired by the display of miniature votive vessels and after started noticing votive vessels everywhere I looked – not only in museum displays such as the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford and the British Museum in London, but also in everyday kitchenware I owned.

I was intrigued by the variety in forms; even though votive vessels are intended as dedications, people still took the time to shape these vessels into ones that looked realistic, and were sized-down replicas of objects they used everyday. I wanted to reflect this preservation of form despite scaling down in my prints, and paid special attention to the boldness of the shape (I wanted to prioritise simplicity) and the concept of the vessels as a collection, since votive vessels were usually found in one place, hence why I presented the vessels as a set of five, as a concertina display and as standalone prints.
