Printmaking


I was interested in the concept of ancient votive vessels as they replicate life-sized, functional ceramic forms but simplified and scaled down. Through my work, I examined the preservation in form during this scaling-down. I chose to emphasise the silhouettes, shadow and delicate though faithful recreation of detail such as spouts, handles, rims, lips and footrings.

Miniature Votive Vessels (2023)

The 'Animalia' series is based on my interest in the depiction of animals in ancient decorative arts from around the world – namely, ceramics and jewellery.

I was intrigued by how certain aesthetic values were conveyed through physical images of animals, and their apparent universality to human tastes - these decorative choices appealed to the ancients just in the same way as they do to people today.

In this series, I chose to depict (from left to right): Moche Sea Lion Pup Vessel; Egyptian Cat Gem; Minoan Bird Earrings; Roman Tortoise Aryballos.
